What to know about waxing

What is waxing?

Waxing is a form of hair removal that involves quickly pulling the hair follicles out right from the root. The hair is pulled out using sticky wax that latches onto it in one quick motion. The process is repeated until all the unwanted hair has been removed.

There are two main types of wax that can be used in the waxing process, hot wax and strip wax. Hot wax is applied directly to the hair, and once it dries, it is peeled off the skin. It’s best for sensitive areas and thick hair, so it’s usually used for intimate areas.

Strip wax is slightly thinner in texture and is used alongside a fabric strip. The wax is applied to the skin and the fabric strip is applied on top and then peeled from the skin. Strip wax is best for less sensitive skin and thinner hair.

What are the benefits of waxing?

  • Pretty much any area can be waxed

One of the great things about waxing is that it can be done on pretty much any area of the body. You can get your eyebrows, face, back, bikini area, legs and - you name it - waxed! Sensitive skin areas will need extra care, but as long as that’s taken into account, waxing is completely safe from head to toe.

  • The hair takes a good while to grow back

Waxing is a popular choice for many because it has relatively long-lasting results. Typically (although this depends on your hair) waxing lasts anywhere from four to six weeks. That’s way longer than shaving.

  • It gives great results

Waxing gives great results in a short amount of time, which can’t be said for some methods of hair removal - looking at you laser. As waxing removes the hair from the root, you won’t have darkness in the area as you may do with shaving. Some immediate redness is normal, but this usually goes down in a day or so.

  • It’s accessible and affordable

Some methods of hair removal can cost a lot of money. Even shaving can add up, especially if you’re shaving every day and getting through a lot of razor and shaving cream. Waxing, however, doesn’t cost that much. Especially if you consider the fact that you will only need an appointment every month or so.

Is waxing painful?

The short answer - it depends on you. Waxing can definitely be uncomfortable for some, but don’t believe any horror stories. When done properly, waxing should only hurt for a couple of seconds during, and may feel a bit unfomfortable after.

This is why it’s important to visit a trained professional with good reviews. They’ll make sure your waxing experience is quick with minimal pain.

After your wax your skin may be more sensitive than usual. This is why proper aftercare is important. Here’s a few tips:

  • Stay out of the sun for at least 48 hours after your wax

  • Don’t over-exfoliate and treat the skin gently

  • Avoid perfumed products on the area

  • Moisturise your skin
