Top tips for smooth, summer-ready legs
Summer’s almost here and you’ve likely already sorted your wardrobe. Sun-dresses, shorts, skirts and more are on the horizon - but this also means putting your legs on full display. After being covered up in most of winter and spring, our legs tend to get a bit neglected and are probably not looking their best. Here’s our top tips for prepping your legs for summer.
Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!
One of the best ways to improve the appearance of your legs is to incorporate exfoliation into your routine. Exfoliation helps to remove the build up layer of dead skin cells that can make the skin appear dull and lifeless. You only need to do this once a week, or every two weeks depending on your skin type.
Exfoliation is a life-saver when it comes to improving your circulation, creating smoother, more-even toned legs and even helping to tackle ‘strawberry skin’ - the small red or dark spots on the skin which can occur from clogged pores or shaving.
To exfoliate your legs, you can use body scrubs or exfoliation mitts in the shower. It’s best to do these when your skin is warmer and wet to avoid irritation. If you have sensitive skin, you may opt for products containing salicylic or glycolic acid - which are both chemical exfoliants that don’t require physical scrubbing.
Keep moisturised and hydrated
Once you’ve removed dead skin cells using exfoliation, you want to protect the new skin by keeping it hydrated. Pick a good quality moisturiser and apply it daily after showering. Products with hyaluronic acid are a great choice - as this ingredient helps lock in moisture.
To give your legs a sunkissed glow without spending all day in the sun and increasing negative health risks, opt for a tinted self-tan moisturiser.
Hair removal
If you choose to remove your leg hair this summer by shaving them, make sure to prepare your legs with warm water and soften the hair by using a shaving gel or even hair conditioner. Use a sharp, good quality razor for a better shave.
Unfortunately, shaving can often cause razor bumps, ingrown hairs and after a few days the hair may come back prickly which will leave your legs looking far from smooth. Waxing is a great option as, instead of cutting the hair, it removes the entire hair follicle from the root. This means that you won’t get the same kind of stubbly regrowth you get from shaving. Instead, you’ll get less regrowth and it will be much finer in appearance. Waxing will also help you avoid ingrowns and razor bumps, ultimately making your legs look much smoother.

Perfection is a myth
Remember, no matter how many lumps, bumps, rashes or marks on your legs, you’re still completely summer ready. While these tips can help improve the appearance of your legs, don’t expect the same effect as an Instagram filter (no one looks like that). Embrace your imperfections and don’t be afraid to wear those shorts this summer!
